Antares Nuclear announced on Monday that it has successfully raised $470 million in its Series C funding round. Antares Nuclear is one of three finalists in the Pentagon’s Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program, aiming to test SMRs on Air Force bases in Colorado and Montana.

 

The company plans to commence operations of its first electricity-producing reactor next year, with installations at U.S. military bases scheduled for 2028. The surge in investor interest in advanced nuclear startups is attributed to the increasing demand for power, particularly from data center construction and the broader electrification of the economy. Notably, Antares Nuclear had previously closed a $96 million Series B round in December, bringing its total funding to $604 million.

 

While the potential for advanced nuclear startups is promising, obstacles to commercialization remain, including an underdeveloped supply chain in the U.S. and production scaling challenges. Moreover, despite the touted benefits of mass manufacturing, it typically takes at least a decade to realize these advantages, with no startup having reached that stage yet. The first SMRs, expected to be operational in the early 2030s, may not be cost competitive with most new power plants, with projections estimating a cost of approximately $214 per megawatt hour. As such, Antares Nuclear's decision to pursue contracts for the U.S. military reflects an understanding of the market dynamics and the potential opportunities it presents.
