Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic has closed a $3.5 billion Series E funding round, valuing the company at a post-money valuation of $61.5 billion. The investment was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures.

 

This funding brings Anthropic's total raised to $18.2 billion. The company plans to use the new capital to advance the development of next-generation AI systems, expand its compute capacity, deepen its research in mechanistic interpretability and alignment, and accelerate its international expansion.

 

Anthropic has also strengthened its relationship with Amazon, which has become a major investor in and collaborator with the AI startup. Amazon has invested a total of $8 billion in Anthropic and is working with the company to optimize its custom AI chips, Trainium, for model training workloads.
