Cornelis, a company specializing in networking technology to enhance communication among AI chips, announced a successful funding round, securing $205 million with IAG Capital Partners as the lead investor. The company also unveiled its new product, Active Compute Fabric, designed to address the issue of GPU idle time while waiting for data. By enabling chips to process and transmit information simultaneously, Cornelis aims to optimize efficiency.

 

Having separated from Intel in 2020, Cornelis is positioning itself as a competitor to Nvidia by providing an open architecture, allowing customers to utilize various GPU and accelerator hardware with Cornelis' networking fabric. While Nvidia chips have the capability to function with other networking fabrics, they are primarily optimized for Nvidia's proprietary software, making the use of Nvidia's complete GPU stack more convenient and appealing for customers.

 

Cornelis is part of a cohort of AI infrastructure companies challenging Nvidia's market dominance, and the company has already commenced product shipments while working on an upcoming generation set for release later this year.
