European Defense Startup Helsing Raises $1.8 Billion in Funding Round

European defense startup Helsing has announced a significant achievement in its latest funding round, securing $1.8 billion in investment which values the German firm at $18 billion. The funding saw participation from both new and existing investors, including U.S. investment bank JPMorgan Chase and venture capital funds like Lightspeed Venture Partners and Iconiq. Helsing's press release noted that the investor demand surpassed the available allocation, reflecting a robust and burgeoning confidence in AI-driven and software-defined defense technology.
The company's offerings encompass a hardware and software platform for defense, which includes the development of drones, underwater surveillance weapons, and artificial intelligence and autonomous software to power military applications. Based in Munich, the firm has positioned itself as a leading European player in defense, with its HX-2 drones being supplied to the Ukrainian army. Helsing has been a beneficiary of Europe's renewed focus on bolstering sovereign capabilities in technology and defense, emphasizing its deep roots in the region.
The recent funding round is expected to expedite Helsing's mission to integrate new AI platforms into the defense capabilities of its growing partner nations. The private market has shown a keen interest in supporting modern defense companies, with U.S.-based Helsing rival Anduril raising $5 billion at a $61 billion valuation in May, and other startups such as Shield AI and Saronic securing funding in the recent past.
