Nitricity Raises $50M Series B Funding for Organic Fertilizer Plant Expansion

Nitricity, a climate scaleup aiming to revolutionize nitrogen fertilizer production, has secured a $50 million Series B funding round ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony for its groundbreaking organic fertilizer plant in Delhi, California. The funding was co-led by World Fund, Europe's leading climate VC, and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Chipotle's Cultivate Next venture fund, Change Forces, Susquehanna Sustainable Investments, EIP, and Fine Structure Ventures.
Nitricity's Ash Tea product, an organic, nitrogen fertilizer made from recycled organic almond shells, air, water, and renewable power, has shown promising results, delivering up to 30% yield increases. The company plans to utilize the fresh capital to expand its clean technology across the US and Europe, make key hires, and invest in R&D. Nitricity, founded by Stanford University graduate students in 2018, has tapped into a considerable market, with estimates suggesting the liquid organic nitrogen fertilizer market alone could exceed $11 billion. The company's pilot factory in Fremont currently produces 80 tons of fertilizer annually, feeding around 80 acres of crops.
Nitricity's plans for expansion include building capacity in the Western US, entering high-value fruit markets, and conducting pilot and field trials in Europe. The company is committed to utilizing local agricultural waste materials to power its European fertilizer production, with a focus on efficiency improvements and market expansion. Dr. Nicolas Pinkowski, CEO of Nitricity, expressed enthusiasm about the company's growth and expansion plans, particularly into the European market.
With the groundbreaking of its innovative fertilizer facility in Delhi, California set for 2026, Nitricity is poised to achieve a 100-fold increase in production capacity, meeting commercial-scale volumes of cost-competitive organic nitrogen fertilizer. The plant's full production capacity is already sold out through 2028 under binding offtake agreements with local organic growers. The company's commitment to sustainability and innovation has garnered support from prominent investors and industry leaders, indicating a promising future for Nitricity's climate-smart technology and its potential to support growers globally.
