SkySQL, a company with historical ties to MySQL and MariaDB, has recently raised $6.6 million in seed funding. The company plans to utilize the investment to integrate conversational AI into databases.

SkySQL's roots trace back to the commercial entity that provided services for MySQL, which later merged with Monty Program to become MariaDB Corporation. Last year, MariaDB spun out SkySQL as an independent business.

The startup, focused on providing a fully managed cloud product for MariaDB, has expanded its support to include Microsoft Azure. SkySQL aims to address the lack of AI optimization in current databases and has introduced AI products such as 'semantic agents' and 'Sky Copilot' to enable natural language queries and database performance optimization through AI assistance.

The founding team, led by CEO Nithin Rao, is dedicated to realizing the vision of being the operational data platform for modern applications, particularly those leveraging generative AI. The co-founders, CTO Jags Ramnarayan and CPO Saravana Krishnamurthy, have extensive experience in the database and cloud computing space, and are committed to building a transformative product in this domain.
