Grammarly Acquires Productivity Startup Coda

Grammarly announced on Tuesday its acquisition of productivity startup Coda. As part of the deal, Coda’s CEO and co-founder Shishir Mehrotra will take over as the new CEO of Grammarly. The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to transform Grammarly’s AI assistant into an “AI productivity platform” by integrating Coda’s AI tools and products. This move will provide Grammarly users with access to new features, including generative AI chat and a productivity suite, aimed at enhancing their efficiency. Rahul Roy-Chowdhury,
Grammarly’s current CEO, will step down from his role and work alongside Mehrotra as an adviser. Mehrotra aims to enhance Grammarly’s AI assistant by creating permission-aware connections with various systems, such as email, docs, CRM, and project trackers. Additionally, Coda’s core product, Coda Docs, will be enhanced with the Grammarly Assistant. In the long term, the plan is to combine the strengths of Coda and Grammarly, offering users company knowledge, generative AI chat features, a full productivity suite, and numerous agents to facilitate smarter work.
Grammarly, founded in 2009, boasts 40 million active users and a valuation of $13 billion, while Coda, valued at $1.4 billion following its Series D raise in 2021, will contribute to positioning Grammarly favorably in the competitive landscape of AI tools for writing and productivity.
