MyFitnessPal has successfully acquired Cal AI, a fast-rising AI calorie counting app startup founded by two high school teenagers. The acquisition, which took almost a year of negotiations, includes the retention of the Cal AI team by MyFitnessPal. Despite the deal, the Cal AI app will remain independent, maintaining its mission of estimating calories by taking pictures of food.

The integration of Cal AI with MFP’s extensive nutrition database, comprising 20 million foods, 68,500 brands, and meals from 380+ restaurant chains, has already been implemented. Although the terms of the deal were undisclosed, it is evident from the $30 million annual revenue of Cal AI that it was a favorable outcome for its young co-founders. MyFitnessPal identified Cal AI's potential as it gained popularity in the app store and was particularly impressed by the dedication and focus of the young CEO and his team.

The retention period for the founders and team at MyFitnessPal post-acquisition was not specified, but it is known that the young founder, Zach Yadegari, continues to run the app as a unit of MFP while attending college. MyFitnessPal currently has no immediate plans to integrate Cal AI into its main product, believing that both apps cater to different market preferences.

Cal AI targets individuals seeking speed and convenience, while MFP focuses on accuracy and detailed meal tracking.
