Napster Acquired by Infinite Reality for $207 Million

3D technology company Infinite Reality has acquired Napster for $207 million, giving the once notorious file-sharing service a new lease on life. Infinite Reality plans to utilize Napster for marketing in the metaverse, creating virtual 3D spaces for music fans to enjoy concerts and listening parties together, as well as for musicians and labels to sell physical and virtual merchandise.
Napster, which was launched in 1999, became the first significant peer-to-peer file-sharing application, allowing PC users to swap MP3 files for free. Since 2016, Napster has been operating as a music streaming service offering on-demand streaming of licensed tracks for $11 per month.
The acquisition by Infinite Reality aims to disrupt the streaming space legally, leveraging Algorand's blockchain technology and Infinite Reality's Web3 technology. The combined entity plans to introduce more social features, digital merchandise, and shopping capabilities to the platform. Infinite Reality, which has been actively acquiring companies in recent months, raised $3 billion at a $12.25 billion valuation in January.
The company is focused on creating virtual experiences and has been secretive about its investors. By integrating Napster into its portfolio, Infinite Reality envisions creating innovative and immersive environments for artists and music fans, tapping into the potential of virtual spaces for community engagement.
