OpenAI has announced its acquisition of Astral, a small startup specializing in open source tools for software developers. The team at Astral will be joining OpenAI to contribute to the development of Codex, the company's AI coding assistant. Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Charlie Marsh, the founder and CEO of Astral, expressed the shared goal of making programming more productive and revolutionizing software development in a blog post. OpenAI's Codex has gained significant traction with over 2 million weekly active users and a three-fold increase in user growth since the beginning of the year. The acquisition is pending customary closing conditions and regulatory approval. OpenAI has been actively pursuing acquisitions, including the recent $6.4 billion deal for io, a cybersecurity startup Promptfoo, and health-care technology startup Torch.

This move underscores OpenAI's dedication to expanding its capabilities through strategic acquisitions, with the company signaling its intent to continue seeking M&A opportunities. OpenAI's focus on enterprise and potential IPO plans have been highlighted in recent all-hands meetings.
