Qualcomm has acquired the generative AI division of VinAI, an AI research company headquartered in Hanoi, for an undisclosed amount. This move signifies Qualcomm's commitment to expanding its presence in the AI tooling sector.

VinAI, founded by former DeepMind research scientist Hung Bui in 2019, specializes in generative AI technologies, including computer vision algorithms and language models.  VinAI, backed by Vietnamese conglomerate VinGroup, focuses on AI-powered automotive products and conducts advanced AI research. VinAI's expertise will contribute to Qualcomm's product families, such as software and chips for smartphones, PCs, and vehicles.

Following the acquisition's completion VinAI's CEO, will join Qualcomm. Additionally, this acquisition marks Qualcomm's second in 2023, following the purchase of German AI and Internet of Things company, Edge Impulse, in early March.
