Scopely Announces $3.5 Billion Acquisition of Niantic's Games Business, Including Pokémon Go

Mobile game developer Scopely has sealed a deal to acquire Niantic's games business for $3.5 billion. The acquisition encompasses popular titles such as Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now. Additionally, Scopely will take over companion apps and services Campfire and Wayfarer. The move is indicative of Scopely's commitment to community-driven, social experiences.
This deal will combine the Niantic games business, which boasts over 30 million monthly active players and generated $1 billion in revenue in 2024, with Scopely's existing portfolio. Pokémon Go, which has amassed over 100 million unique players, continues to maintain its global prominence. The acquisition is expected to create one of the largest global player communities with over half a billion players.
The Niantic game teams will continue their work under the leadership of Kei Kawai and Ed Wu at Scopely. Notably, the acquisition reflects Scopely's dedication to investing in engaging games with devoted communities. Niantic's Pokémon Go has remained a top 10 mobile title since its launch, with over 20 million weekly active players and a deeply engaged fan community. The game has reached players in over 190 countries and regions, with approximately half of all players returning daily. The company also unveiled Pikmin Bloom in 2021 and introduced Monster Hunter Now in 2023, both of which have garnered significant success and player engagement.
The deal will see Niantic spin off its technology platform into a new entity, Niantic Spatial Inc., focusing on geospatial AI. The acquisition is poised to enhance the development and support of the acquired games, ensuring a bright future for players. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC and Fenwick & West LLP are advising Niantic, while J.P. Morgan and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP are advising Scopely.
