Cognition Unveils Devin: The First Autonomous AI Software Engineer

Cognition, a new AI startup backed by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and tech industry leaders, has introduced a revolutionary fully autonomous AI software engineer called 'Devin'. Unlike existing coding assistants such as Github Copilot, Devin is capable of managing entire development projects independently, from writing and debugging code to final execution.
The company elaborated on Devin's capabilities, stating it can:
- learn how to use unfamiliar technologies
- build and deploy apps end to end
- autonomously find and fix bugs in codebases
- train and fine tune its own AI models
- address bugs and feature requests in open source repositories
- contribute to mature production repositories.
The company is in the process of offering early access to Devin to select users, with broader access expected in the future. Cognition's funding includes a $21 million Series A led by Founders Fund, with the support of industry leaders including Patrick and John Collison, Elad Gil, Sarah Guo, Chris Re, Eric Glyman, Karim Atiyeh, Erik Bernhardsson, Tony Xu and Fred Ehrsam.
