Fusion Startup Helion Raises $425M for Groundbreaking Reactor

Helion, a fusion startup, has secured a $425 million Series F funding round, increasing its valuation to $5.245 billion. The company also unveiled its latest prototype, Polaris, which is expected to be the first fusion reactor to produce electricity. Helion's unique approach involves a field-reversed configuration reactor, which utilizes powerful magnets to compress plasma and generate fusion reactions.
The company aims to supply electricity to Microsoft by 2028, and to achieve this, they are working on expediting the development of their commercial-scale power plant. Challenges lie in scaling production and manufacturing specialized components in-house.
Despite the unconventional approach, Helion remains optimistic about its ability to deliver on its ambitious timeline.
The funding will be used to accelerate the progress of the power plant, improve in-house manufacturing capabilities, and attract new investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, and a major university endowment.
